Advantages of Natural Gas – Top 6

By definition, like Coal and Petroleum, Natural is also made from dead plants and animal matter buried beneath layers of sediment exposed to intense heat and pressure over millions of years. In fact, they are found almost at a similar place as petroleum or crude oil.

Not to mention, there are so many uses of natural gas that we see in our day-to-day life. For example, we use natural gas for doing our household work, and for running our automobiles. We can even use natural gas to generate electricity. No wonder, natural gas is a non-renewable resource of energy.

Still, if I am given a chance to choose between Coal, petroleum, and natural gas. I will happily choose natural gas over coal and petroleum. And, I am damn sure that after reading this piece of article, you would also choose natural gas over all the other types of fossil fuels available in the world.

Advantages of Natural Gas – Top 6

  • Cleaner than You Think
  • Less Expensive than Other Fossils
  • Abundantly Available
  • Wide Range of Applications
  • Safer to Use
  • Creates Job Opportunities

Cleaner than You Think

One of the biggest environmental benefits of using natural gas is that it is much cleaner than you think. As per the recent World Nuclear Association’s report on the Comparison of Lifecycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Various Electricity Generation Sources, natural gas releases 30% less carbon dioxide than oil and 45% less than coal.

To be precise, a natural gas power plant emits 499 tonnes of CO2 per gigawatt-hour (GWh) of energy produced. On the flip side, an oil and coal power plant emits 733 and 888 tonnes per GWh of energy produced, respectively. To sum up, using natural gas has a quite smaller impact on our environment.

Less Expensive than Other Fossils

Just to let you know Nuclear Fuel i.e a non-renewable energy resource is much cheaper than natural gas. In the above image, you can see that the price of Natural gas ( Blue Line) is always lesser than Crude Oil (Green Line) and Coal prices (Red Line).

Abundantly Available

Even though marked as a finite resource, Natural gas is abundantly available in almost every corner of the world. Well, if not now in some corner, then maybe we could discover it in the coming decades. I mean, we are finding natural gas reserves every here and there regularly.

On the other hand, if I talk about the discovered natural gas reserves, as per Worldometer, there are 6,923 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proven gas reserves in the world as of 2017. To be exact, the world has proven gas reserves that will last for more than 50 years, of course, at the current level of consumption.

Wide Range of Applications

It can also efficiently work in an already existing infrastructure. Be it coal or oil-powered plants or gasoline-powered vehicles. Well, you have to install a natural gas kit in your existing vehicle to run it properly using natural gas, technically, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Not to mention, the way we extract natural gas from their reserve is the same as extracting crude oil. Natural gas is found almost at a similar place as petroleum or crude oil. In other words, there is no need to invest thousands of dollars to erect a huge infrastructure for extracting natural gas from beneath the ground.

It’s already there as a crude oil extracting site. Apart from generating electricity and running our vehicles, we use natural gas to heat our homes, cook our delicious foods, and many more.

As per the Our World in Data, in 2019, more than 24% of the world’s energy need was fulfilled by utilizing natural gas products like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Safer to Use

One of the biggest fear of using natural gas in the form of CNG or LPG is the possibility of leakage that can cause some serious explosion. However, there is nothing to worry about. Since natural gas is lighter than air, therefore, as a result, it quickly disperses into the air.

No wonder, natural gas is highly flammable. There are times that even before the dispersion of natural gas into the air, it gets ignited. Hence causing havoc in the surrounding area. Therefore, for easy and early leakage detection, a harmless chemical called Mercaptan is added to make it smell similar to rotten eggs.

Creates Job Opportunities

In the current world scenario, we are witnessing a huge dip in job opportunities. This is where using natural gas comes in handy. Therefore, last but not least one of my top 6 advantages of using natural gas as an energy source is that it not only creates job opportunities. It also helps in the upliftment of the national economy.

Some of the notable sectors include CNG kit maker and installer, Natural gas transporter, Natural Gas Project Turbine Engineers, Control System Engineer for Large Gas Turbines, Electrical Engineer – Power Plant (Gas based), Sales Executive- Engineering/ Oil & gas Industry, Oil and Gas Production Operations Advanced Application Engineer, Oil & Gas Upstream Business and Integration Architect, Sr Engineer Reliability & Pipeline Integrity(Mechanical), etc.

Some other Advantages of Natural Gas:

Apart from the above-mentioned benefits or advantages, I am also mentioning some of a few here.

  • Reliable source of energy
  • Compatible with other energy resources
  • Easy to store and transport
  • Efficient
  • Reduces dependence on foreign oil
  • Provides stability in Energy Sector, etc.

I am a mechanical engineer by profession. Just because of my love for fundamental physics, I switched my career, and therefore I did my postgraduate degree in physics. Right now I am a loner (as ever) and a Physics blogger too. My sole future goal is to do a Ph.D. in theoretical physics, especially in the field of cosmology. Because in my view, every aspect of physics comes within the range of cosmology. And I love traveling, especially the Sole one.
